Washington Huskies men's hoops cancels season-opening tourney due to COVID-19 concerns

Washington Huskies men’s basketball will have to wait (longer) to open its season.

UW announced Saturday the cancellation of this week’s Husky Classic — a four-team tournament it was scheduled to host at Alaska Airlines Arena — due to COVID-19-related shutdowns with Cal State Fullerton and San Diego, two of the visiting teams for the event. The availability of the third team, Portland State, was also thrust into question because of the program’s uncertain status with the Oregon Health ity.

The tournament was scheduled to be held Nov. 25, 27 and 28.

“We’re obviously disappointed for our student-athletes who have been getting ready for the start of the season but we understand the necessity of the protocols put in place to protect their safety during this time,” coach Mike Hopkins said in a statement. “We’re going to keep looking to get games on the schedule, but the health and safety of our student-athletes is the most important thing right now.”

The Huskies are now currently set to open their season at Utah on Dec. 3, followed by a three-game 币圈app都有哪些homestand: vs. Seattle U (Dec. 9), Oregon (Dec. 12) and Montana (Dec. 16).

Washington is scheduled to face Colorado in a non-Pac-12 game on Dec. 20 in Las Vegas.
